Hiking on Mt. Williamson

Along Angeles Crest Highway
in the San Gabriel Mountains

Sunday, September 28th

Mt. Williamson is noted for its great views, both along the trail and at the peak.  ‘California Hiking’ describes the trail saying, “Although the views have been excellent all along, nothing prepares you for the scene on top of Mt. Williamson’s narrow ridgeline, where you have dizzying views on both sides.”  The summit has a great view looking across the San Gabriels, as well as down to the Mohave Desert and Devil’s Punchbowl.  On a clear day you can see as far as the Sierra Nevadas and Telescope Peak along the western rim of Death Valley.

The trail to the peak of Mt. Williamson winds through a mix of jeffrey, ponderosa and sugar pine trees.  The hike is five miles round-trip, with moderate steepness.

Plan to bring whatever you’d like to have for lunch for yourself, as well as water for the hike.  I’ll bring some wine, to contribute to the festivities.  There’s a restroom shortly before the trailhead that we’ll plan to visit both before and after the hike.

Feel free to invite along any friends you’d like to join us!  Kids are welcome...even if you don’t do the entire hike with us, it’s a pretty drive and a nice area in which to spend the afternoon.

We’ll meet at two locations, a Starbucks in Manhattan Beach (9:30 AM) and at the foot of Angeles Crest Hwy. (10:30AM).  The Forest Service charges $5.00 per car for a one-day parking pass that you have to buy ahead of time.  I’ll get enough passes for everyone, and you can kick in a few bucks that day.

Please let me know if you’d like to join us, so I can plan for buying the parking passes.

I think this will be an enjoyable little adventure, and I hope you can come along!  Let me know if you have any questions about the hike.
