Hike in La Jolla Canyon
in Point Mugu State Park

On April 27th,
a group of us will be going hiking north of Malibu in Pt. Mugu State Park.
This is one of my favorite hikes in Southern California. The hike is a
six-mile loop leading to La Jolla Valley, which is one of the largest and
prettiest meadows in the Santa Monica Mountains. The
meadow is well over a mile long, surrounded by peaks including the Boney
Mountain ridge, shown here...

We'll
meet at the trailhead at 10:30-11:00 AM. I'll have juice and muffins for
those of you arriving on the early side. The hike winds through La
Jolla Canyon, where we'll walk beside a small creek. Though the
creek
may only be a trickle, the surrounding foliage should be relatively green this time
of year. The trail is mildly uphill but never too steep, and it
has a couple of small ocean views along the way. |
| At about the halfway point
along the hike, we'll reach the meadow and stop for a leisurely potluck
lunch. Our lunch spot will be on a small knoll near the center of
La Jolla Valley, with a great view of the entire meadow. This will
be a relaxed break, and we'll plan to linger there for loosely one to 1
1/2 hours. |

Everyone is asked to bring
one food item to share with the group. (No need for Wolfgang Puck, but
ideally a bit nicer than individually wrapped slices of American
cheese!) I'll bring a few bottles of wine...if anyone else cares
to bring a bottle, please do! I'll also bring plates, cups,
napkins, utensils and picnic blankets. Plan to bring your own water or similar
beverages for the hike. |
| Definitely feel free to invite friends
along! Kids are welcome on the
hike. However, the state park doesn't permit dogs on the
trail. Either hiking or tennis shoes will be fine. In addition to flush toilets at the trailhead, there are
also porta-pots about a half mile past our lunch spot, making wine with
lunch not such a bad idea! |
