Bears

Bears

If we're lucky enough, one of the most beautiful nature sightings is seeing a bear. They live in most areas of the park where we'll be camping.

In terms of bodily danger, you would have to be really unlucky to be attacked by a bear. They're much more afraid of people than you need be of them. Unless you do something stupid like play "Pet The Cub", there's little chance of a bear coming after you.

Coming after your food is a different story! Bears aggressively go after human food. All food will need to be stored in car trunks or metal lockers at the campsite. While I've never heard of anyone having trouble storing food in car trunks, bears can recognize food by sight as well as smell, and they are familiar with coolers as food containers. So don't leave food or coolers visible from outside of your vehicle...bears will break car windows to get at food. Plan to cover visible coolers and such with a blanket or whatever.

Each meal team will need to be responsible for insuring that all leftovers from their meal get discarded or put away in your cars. Please discard leftovers or store them in your car trunks, as the bear lockers will become quite cluttered if they’re used to store everyone's leftovers. Thanks!

It's also not a good idea to bring open food into your tent. Some people even avoid bringing in packaged food such as snack bars, scented toiletries, etc. This is more cautious than I've ever been, but you'll hear such recommendations sometimes, and you can decide for yourself. At a minimum, I'd suggest you avoid using an unwrapped steak as a pillow.
